Also sound related is the marine's voice clips which I personally found to be more 'forced 'tude' without the charm or likeability of a Duke Nukem - this may be a more personal subjective dislike but it didn't take long before I switched it off altogether. That's completely absent here so far and seems like it could be easily remedied with different sound effects to give that visceral sense of power and impact. Something that helped DoomRL so much was how satisfying the weapons felt, perfectly mirroring Doom's punch packing shotgun blasts and even pistol firing.

I may be an outlier but things like the fourth wall breaking idle voiceover quips ( "turn based doesn't mean.") underscored for me that the devs and I have conflicting philosophies on immersion - for a humour game like Dungeons of Dredmor there's nothing lost by adding meta dialogue but my view is that to the developers it's a series of scripts with moving objects and a permanent fail state, to me it's a lone soldier in a hostile space station trying to survive - the latter is what makes it compelling beyond the mechanical gameplay.Īs alluded, the gameplay is fine but it's very safe standard fare and hasn't provided those 'roguelike moments' yet.

This may not be a big deal to many and that was my issue - I got the sense it wasn't a big deal to its developers, in the way theme so often isn't, but that was always half the appeal for me with Doom and if you remove that then you're left with a game that needs to be particularly engaging to compensate. As the backdrop went, it honestly felt too clean - like a series of dimly lit laboratories-tiles look nice and glossy but I think dirty and gritty would better serve the setting and the player. It has the tropes and trappings of these worlds but seems to use them solely as a backdrop without trying to set the scene and engage the imagination. The game so far has shown the most character in its CRT terminal aesthetic, for the game itself really hasn't pulled me in with its theme. However, when I heard the name 'Jupiter Hell' and heard the project announced, I had visions of a moody Doom meets Alien setting that would easily grab me with its familiar sci-fi horror universe.

Obviously DoomRL had a prefab world and theme that was already dripping with flavour, it's one of the most celebrated series' in PC gaming and that was never going to be easily matched.

Overall conclusion first, I've found it underwhelming though not bad per se, just safe middle of the road stuff.įull thoughts: The biggest note I took was the absence of DoomRL's strongest quality-theme/setting/character. I came away with very solid impressions of DoomRL in half that time so I feel there's merit to these early thoughts. I'd like to share my early thoughts on the game and hear others, the release announcement thread didn't seem to be attracting much in the way of reviews so I'm making this topic but if it must be moved then that's fine.ĭisclaimers: I've played maybe an hour total spread across two short play sessions and obviously it's beta/early access so that's the perspective to keep here.
